Have some questions about how to get a portrait painted of your pet?
Q) Am I a bad person because I don't already have a pet portrait?
Not necessarily, but you may be of questionable character, and custom art of your pet can fix that and make you a better person overall. : )
Q) Why does anyone need a pet portrait?
Because a true pet lover lets their animals in to their life, as a dependent, a family member, a partner, and the pet occupies that role, loving you and protecting you, and adopting your family as its own. A portrait of your pet is one of the best ways for you to reconcile that relationship within your own world.
For centuries, artists have created pet portraits for the wealthy to memorialize and honor their pets, and the paintings were a true luxury. But I believe every pet owner deserves to have such a portrait on display. And, good original art improves your living spaces and makes your life better.
Q) How long does it take?
The painting itself and image preparation beforehand usually takes me between 6 and 12 total hours. The overall process usually takes me about 2-4 weeks from when we exchange good pictures of your pet... BUT I can work around your schedule in most cases, so if you have a specific date you need the painting, just let me know.
Q) What sort of photos work best?
The photos I like to work from are usually lit from one side, and from eye level or below the pet (Photos taken from above the animal looking up tend to skew their body, and look unnatural in the painting).
Side lighting from windows and doors helps the images in most cases as well.
Q) Is this art, or is it portraiture?
My focus is to make the painting realistic yes, but interpretive. I prefer not to get too crazy with color or form in regard to the pet itself, but leave open some interpretation.
Q) Do you offer gift certificates?
Sure do. You can purchase one on this page, and the amount can be used by the recipient for a completed custom painting at the size you selected, or as credit toward a larger pet painting. Questions? Email me [email protected].
Q) Can I have more than one pet in a painting?
Sure, however the composition needs to work at the size requested, and if I determine that it's not going to be successful, we will have to make alternate plans. Painting prices quoted are for a single pet per image. *Please note: Additional animals to be included in each painting will incur an additional fee of 50% of the size price. Example: 9x12" = $300 for one pet, or $450 for two pets.
Q) Can I get cash back for a gift certificate I received?
Sorry, no. Gift certificates are redeemable for custom paintings only. No cash or credit will be returned. You can re-gift it though... if you're in to that kind of thing.
